LIHUE — Waimea High School softball scored nine runs in the top of the seventh inning on Wednesday to seal a 17-8 comeback over Kauai High School during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation softball contest played under a chilling wind and intermittent showers at Isenberg Park.
Tied 2-2 after a complete first inning, the Menehune pulled to a 6-3 lead behind a Nia Pablo whack that drove in two runs.
Facing a 3-7 hole in the fourth frame, Kauai came back to go ahead, 8-7, behind a 2-run homerun by Jorey Ellkamar and a 2-RBI triple off Dallas Batoon.
The Menehune knotted the contest in the sixth inning when Kealohi Pundyke’s bat drove a run across for the 8-8 read.
When the Raiders came up empty during the home half, Waimea was ready for the seventh inning, when Pablo smacked a 3-run homer to highlight the hitting after Kauai made a pitcher change. This was Waimea’s only homer in the contest and the last hit of the night that pushed the scoreboard to a 17-8 Menehune bulge.
Menehune Kayani Santos and Aleiya Acosta-Batis each had two RBI hits, and Shelcee Nakaya, who went the distance on the mound, won the pitcher honor.
Waimea, celebrating its Wednesday night win, changed to pink when they staffed the food booth on Thursday during the KIF girls’ flag football games at Hanapepe Stadium.
Saturday, the Menehune hosts Kapaa High School in a doubleheader at the Waimea Canyon Park, where the first game pitch goes at 9 a.m. The second contest will start following a 30-minute break after the first game.
