KILAUEA — A North Shore resident was discovered unresponsive in the water off Kalihiwai Beach on Monday.
Investigators with the Kauai police announced that on April 7, at approximately 7:30 a.m., first responders were dispatched to Kalihiwai Beach after receiving calls regarding an unresponsive swimmer in the water.
The man was brought to shore by beachgoers who administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the unresponsive man. Ocean Safety Bureau (OSB) personnel and the American Medical Response medical team arrived and took command of the scene by administering advanced lifesaving efforts.
The victim was transported to Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital in Kapaa, where he was pronounced dead. He was identified as 74-year-old Peter Koorenhof of Kilauea. His death marks Kauai’s second water-related fatality.
An autopsy has been scheduled to determine his exact cause of death. No foul play is suspected in this case.
Although a High Surf Advisory was in effect through the weekend and into early Tuesday morning for all north-facing shores, hazardous water conditions persist. OSB officials continue to advise beachgoers against swimming during strong conditions and only swim at beaches with a lifeguard tower.
