KILAUEA — A three-vehicle collision occurred over the weekend, resulting in the hospitalization of two and the closure of Kuhio Highway on Sunday.
On April 6, at approximately 5:30 p.m., officials with the Kauai Police Department (KPD) closed Kuhio Highway between Waiakalua Street and Wailapa Road due to a three-vehicle collision near Kilauea Farms.
A white 2024 Chevrolet SUV carrying two occupants was noted traveling southbound when it crossed into the opposing lane. This caused a sideswiping collision with a white 2021 Toyota truck. The Chevrolet continued its southbound trajectory within the northbound lane, ultimately colliding with a gray 2023 Chevrolet SUV.
The multi-vehicle wreck closed Kuhio Highway for approximately three hours while KPD’s Traffic Safety Section team conducted its on-site investigation.
The driver of the white Chevrolet, a 60-year-old male, sustained non-life threatening injuries, while his 58-year-old passenger was airlifted to the Queens Medical Center on Oahu in serious condition. The driver of the grey SUV was transported to the Wilcox Medical Center in Lihue and is currently in stable condition, whereas the driver of the Toyota truck was not injured.
The investigation remains ongoing. Officials also reported that speed and impairment do not appear to have been factors in this crash. Law enforcement urges any witnesses who may have seen this collision to contact Officer Himongala at (808) 241-1617. Individuals wanting to remain anonymous can call CrimeStoppers Kauai at (808) 241-1617.
