LIHUE — Kapaa High School traveled to the Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea on Tuesday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation games being played there. Over the townside, the KIF game was hosted at the Wilcox Gymnasium on the Island School campus.
Kapaa High School swept the Menehune in three sets during the Junior Varsity games, with scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 15-8. During the varsity contest, the Warriors needed four sets to complete the sweep: 25-19, 29-31, 25-19, and 25-21.
Over at the Wilcox Gymnasium, the Voyagers of Island School took the Red Raiders in straight sets, 25-17, 25-22, and 25-20, despite strong comeback efforts by Kauai High School.
The Voyagers put weight on its long string service efforts by several of its team to pull away and settle the score.
After Kauai pulled to within four points in the first set, 16-20, behind a Caleb Schmaeling band, Island School pulled away on a string of points from Eli Racpan in the service block. The string, spiced with a hit apiece by Elijah Enoka and Logan Reynolds, could not close the door when Pierson Fox saved the side for Kauai. Reynolds answered the hiccup and shut the door.
During the second set, Kauai looked at a 5-11 deficit before Trestyn Reis served up a string of points to knot the contest 11-11. The string was flavored with a Fox hit and a handful of Voyager miscues.
Orion Magaoay answered for the Voyagers to bring Island School to a 19-11 lead, with the string being seasoned with an ace and hits from Matthew Dobashi and Enoka.
Looking at a 17-23 hole, the Voyagers survived two strong service strings by Al Juliano and Reis before putting the game away on a Kauai service error.
Kauai looked at a 9-5 gap over the Voyagers in the third set before Racpan served up enough points to stalemate the contest, 10-10.
Kauai’s Dylan Takata, being kept ineffective throughout the night, thumped to a 13-12 bulge with a Barkley Gillman hit.
Reis pulled Kauai to a 20-23 reading before the Raiders ran into a passing error that sealed the deal.
The next KIF volleyball games take place on Friday when Kauai takes on Kapaa at the Bernice Hundley Gym, and Island School takes on Waimea at the Clem Gomes Gym in a single contest starting at 6:30 p.m.
At the Bernice Hundley Gym, the JV game starts at 5 p.m., and the varsity game starts 25 minutes after the JV games are over.
