KAPAA — The Kapaa High School softball team remains undefeated following its dual wins over Kauai High School on Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation softball games played at the Kapaa High School field.
Playing before an appreciative and enthusiastic audience, the Lady Warriors clinched the KIF first round following wins of 7-6 and 13-6 over the Red Raiders.
The victories give the Warriors a 6-win record with no losses. Waimea follows with three wins and three losses, its wins coming over Kauai High School and its losses coming from the Warriors. Kauai High School is still looking for its first win.
The dual wins did not come without it challenges as the Warriors looked at the first contest from the hole. Facing a 5-run deficit following the visitor half of the third inning, Kapaa responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the frame, a pair of runs in the fourth inning, another pair in the sixth inning, and the go-ahead run in the seventh frame.
Kauai was able to answer the rally with just a single run in the sixth inning in the contest where both teams finished with seven hits.
Kapaa leftfielder Naylea Machado was three-for-three in the batter’s box, and started the Warrior comeback by scoring the first of her three scores in the bottom of the third.
Nahe Marshall scored twice, once in the fourth and once in the sixth, and Charlize Kenney, tripling to start the seventh inning, scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single by Jaicie Martinez to right field.
Isabel Capistran Nakagoshi, who marked a stolen base in the fourth frame, scored her run in the third inning.
Kauai’s lead off hitter, Kaylee, marked two hits and scored three times to lead the Red Raiders’ effort.
The Lady Warriors closed the day with a 13-6 win in the day’s second contest.
The next KIF softball game is scheduled for April 9 when Waimea opens the second round by visiting Kauai High School at the Isenberg Park for a single nightcap contest starting at 6 p.m.
