LIHUE — Kapaa High School boys volleyball needed four sets to walk out of the new Kauai High School gymnasium with a win on Tuesday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation games.
The Junior Varsity Warriors chipped out a 2-1 margin over Kauai High School, 26-24, 23-25 and 12-15.
The varsity boys stayed in control and hammered out a 3-1 series, 25-12, 25-18, 19-25 and 25-12 with every Warrior getting a piece of the night’s win.
Over at the Wilcox Gymnasium where the Voyagers hosted the Menehune, Island School stung the Menehune in three sets, 25-14, 25-22 and 25-15, according to Kapaa’s Athletic Director Greg Gonsalves.
Kapaa broke away from an 8-3 lead in the opening set when Isaiah Gutierrez served up a string of three points, including back to back aces that pulled the Warriors to a seven-point bulge. Warrior Emry Picturachsatit helped the cause with a bang until Kauai’s Kai Potts served up an ace to end the Kapaa run.
Kapaa continued to widen the lead behind strong service block performances by Landon Szegda, Curren Pope and Austin Green until Filisi Hunt put away the string behind a Picturachsatit hammer.
Picturachsatit continued to blaze in the second set when he took the Warriors from a 9-8 lead to 16-8 behind a string of seven points from the service block. That string was enhanced when Kauai committed forced court mistakes like multi-hitting, hitting errors and passing errors despite the moments of glitter from Christian Vito, Dylan Takata and Potts.
KIF boys volleyball continues on Friday when Kauai High School hosts Waimea at the new Kauai High School gymnasium, and Kapaa hosts Island School at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
Action start at 5 p.m. at the Kauai High School gymnasium when the JV games serve up. The varsity contest starts 25 minutes following the JV game, but not earlier than 6:30 p.m.
Because Island School did not field a JV team for this season, there will be a single contest starting at 6:30 p.m. at Kapaa.
