LIHUE — The Contractors Association of Kauai (CAK) has up to $11,000 available for scholarships. Applications for the scholarships are currently being accepted, and the deadline is April 21.
Application forms are available with the senior counselors at Kapaa, Kauai and Waimea high schools, and Island School. The forms are also available with the Construction Trades staff at the Kauai Community College.
To be eligible for the CAK scholarships, applicants must be a Kauai resident attending a four-year college or university with a declared major in a construction-related field of study.
Some examples include civil, mechanical, electrical engineering, architecture, construction management, landscape architecture and more.
Or, the applicant can be a Kauai resident doing post-graduate work in a construction-related field.
Applicants may also be high school graduating seniors planning to major in a construction field of study starting in the fall semester at a CAK-approved college or university.
In addition, CAK also administers the Kenneth Shioi Memorial Scholarship program which offers a $1,000 scholarship for a student planning to attend, or is currently a full-time student at, KCC majoring in carpentry, electrician or HVAC technician.
In 2024, CAK scholarship recipients included Destry Shibuya, who is a civil engineering major at the University of Hawaii at Manoa; Kylee Oyama ,who is studying civil engineering at Santa Clara University; Kailash Letman, who is an architecture major at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston; Talen Koerte, who is a civil engineer major at California Polytechnic State University; Dylan Lee, who is studying architecture at the University of Hawaii at Manoa; Don RB Bumanglang, a carpentry major at the Kauai Community College; and Radon Sebastian, who is a pre-engineering major at Edmonds College in Washington.
The Contractors Association of Kauai was established in 1957 as a trade association of licensed contractors, suppliers and businesses affiliated with the construction industry on Kauai. CAK is also affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders.
