PORTUGAL — Chris Kauwe and Team Makule will be in the waters of Praia Do Sul in Ericeira, Portugal, starting today at The OC4 Surfing Challenge promoted by Ocean Club Ericeira.
Kauwe and Team Makule is just one of 10 teams from around the globe that converged in Portugal for the first international waa nalu surfing competition that include “big” names like Hawaiian Ikaika Kalama, Brazilians Ranin Baptistotte and Basque Guillermo Lecumberri.
During the three days of active competition, there will be demonstration sessions, competition, parties and live music. The waiting period started March 21 and extends through March 28.
Teams from Portugal, France, Spain, Brazil, Hawaii and the mainland United States will have the opportunity to compete for the first international trophy in the OC4 Surfing discipline, or surfing in four-man Hawaiian canoes. There will be a live streaming broadcast on YouTube which will be available on the event’s online channels.
The OC4 Surfing Challenge is promoted by Ocean Club Ericeira, and approved by the Portuguese Canoeing Federation. The event has the support of Laneez Ericeira Surf House, Woo Canoes, Nortada Beer, Town & Country Surf Designs, Mafra City Council, Yama Custom Paddle and Surf Solutions.
Kauwe has been canoe surfing on Kauai for numerous years, taking tourists and residents out of Kalapaki and Poipu beaches in both single- and double-hulled canoes. Kauwe also captains the double-hulled craft that brings Santa for a visit at Kalapaki Beach on Christmas Eve.
