LIHUE — The Pearl City High School boys volleyball team needed four sets to escape the Kauai High School team on Saturday night at the new Kauai High School gymnasium.
The Chargers’ varsity win in four saves the visiting Pearl City team that earlier in the evening suffered a 2-1 loss — 25-23, 22-25 and 12-15 — against the Kauai High School Junior Varsity. The overall result of the Chargers’ visit that started on Thursday is the JV teams return to Oahu with a bit of Kauai aloha as the Charger JV dropped 2-1 against the JV Menehune, dropped 2-1 against Kapaa, and wrapped up with 2-1 loss to Kauai High School.
On the varsity courts, Pearl City lost to Waimea in five sets, 25-6, 20-25, 25-18, 20-25 and 12-15 on Thursday night before running into Kapaa on Friday night that played as a Kauai Interscholastic Federation preseason match at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
Pearl City took that Friday night special in four sets, 20-25, 25-20, 25-15 and 25-19.
According to a member of the Chargers coaching staff, Pearl City played four sets against Island School during the first of a double-header Saturday. Because Island School did not field a JV team, the Chargers finished the outing at the Wilcox Gymnasium by splitting with the Voyagers. Island School won two sets, and Pearl City won two sets before the Chargers met up with the Red Raiders.
The value of having the Chargers visit during the Spring Break proved valuable to all of the participating teams as schools and teams could further develop their individual players who were able to get court time in substitution for those players who were on vacation, in many cases, as a college familiarization tour.
Coaches did not have the pressure to win and had the flexibility to work the bench and strengthen those players who needed court time and experience to become better players.
The post-game paina helped create stronger bonds between the schools. Already, players and coaches were looking ahead to future meetings with the Chargers.
Another off-island team, the University of Hawaii women’s volleyball, will be on Kauai on Wednesday.
Everyone is invited to watch the Rainbow Wahine take on the University of Wisconsin at the new Kauai High School gymnasium in Hawaii’s Spring Game with no admission. An autograph session will follow.
Earlier in the day, the Rainbow Wahine will be leading a workshop for younger keiki in the old Kauai High School gym. That workshop is already sold out.
The Rainbow Wahine’s trip is made possible through the sponsorships of Somers West, the Kekaha Agricultural Association, the Hawaii Crop Improvement Association, and other community sponsors.
