Christina Ahia-Schimmelfennig, right, shares the shade of the hale at Prince Kuhio Park and the Kuhio wind screen with her kumu, Kekai Kaaumoana Cummings, on Saturday, March 22, 2025, during the Kuhio Day commemorative presented by the Royal Order of Kamehameha. Christina, who is learning to sign in olelo Hawaii from Cummings, met her kahu after learning the mother of her two pet dogs was deaf and taught to respond by Cummings who is considered “expert” in four languages.

Prince Kuhio Day is Wednesday, but there are a lot of events before the actual birthdate of Prince Kuhio. The Royal Order of Kamehameha and its women auxiliary hosted the formal protocol on Saturday at the Prince Kuhio Park where racers participating in the 55th annual Prince Kuhio long distance canoe races grazed the Hoai perimeter near the Prince Kuhio Park and Kamaloula Cultural Preserve.

John Kaohelaulii rented a truck to bring his konane and supporting items to the park so guests could try their hand at beating opponents in a traditional Hawaiian contest that strongly resembles checkers (thus the popular Hawaiian checkers moniker). John is also going to be a part of the day-long Grand Hyatt Resort and Spa event of craft and cultural activities on Tuesday starting at 9 a.m., and return to the Prince Kuhio Park on Wednesday for the Prince Kuhio Day event presented by Na Kahu O Hoai foundation.
In the meanwhile, the Kauai Society of Artists were preparing for its next presentation, the Debby Maddy shibori workshops that will transform the KSA gallery from April 1. Registration for the April 1-3, or April 5-7 are still eligible for “early bird” registration.
Artist Prema M was available with his latest exhibit acceptances as he helped KSA clear the remaining pieces of the 2025 Spring Show when performers of the Kauai Dance House stopped by to solicit car washes as a fundraiser for the dance company’s upcoming trip to Oahu for dance competition.
Jean Souza and the Kauai Ocean Discovery was also preparing for the final Sanctuary Ocean Count of 2025 that will take place on Saturday at various Ocean Count sites around the island.
Happy Prince Kuhio Day (it’s a state and county holiday)!
