KAPAA — Island School and Kapaa High School earned the latest victories in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation boys volleyball contests that were waged on Tuesday night.
Playing at the new Kauai High School gym, Island School (which didn’t field a Junior Varsity team) defeated the host Red Raider boys in straight sets, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-19. The Kauai loss marks the team’s second straight loss after dropping to Waimea High School in straight sets during the KIF opener last week.
Over at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapaa, Waimea High School split its outing after the JV team was victorious in three sets — 25-15, 25-20 and 15-9 — and the varsity squad dropped in four sets — 16-25, 14-25, 25-9 and 18-25.
On the varsity floor, Kapaa controlled the first set before running into a rousing Menehune squad.
The Warriors broke away from a 9-9 logjam in the second set behind five straight points served up by Warrior Emry Picturechsatit spiced with hits from Austin Green and Waimea miscues. More service strings from Curren Pope and Landon Szegda kept Kapaa ahead until John Ibe sealed the deal, 25-19.
Waimea woke up in the third set as a string of points by server Shayden Ranis-Alameda Dela Cruz settled Waimea at 10-2 as the Warrior committed hitting miscues.
Kapaa’s Filisi Hunt got the side out only to have the Menehune launch another string of points by Red Punzalan in the service block. Facing a 16-5 lead, the Menehune put away the set behind a Warrior hitting error and a bang from Daniel Kaohelaulii Kala.
More volleyball is on tap when the KIF hosts Pearl City High School in a preseason series of meetings that start on Thursday when Waimea hosts the visiting PCHS at the Clem Gomes Gym. The JV game serves up from 5 p.m. with the varsity contest starting 25 minutes after the JV game ends.
Friday night, PCHS visits the Bernice Hundley Gym against Kapaa, and on Saturday, PCHS plays a doubleheader. The visiting Chargers play the Voyagers starting at 10 a.m., and will face Kauai High School in a 5 p.m. match at the new Kauai High School gym.
The next KIF boys volleyball games take place on Tuesday when Kauai High School meets Kapaa at the Bernice Hundley Gym, and Waimea faces Island School at the Wilcox Gymnasium.
The JV games start at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity contest starting 25 minutes after the JV game finishes. At the Wilcox Gymnasium, action starts at 6:30 p.m. for a single match.
