PRINCEVILLE — Just 18 strokes separated the Kauai High School boys from the Kapaa High School boys on Saturday during the latest round of Kauai Interscholastic Federation golf that was played on Saturday at the Princeville Makai Golf Club.
Kapaa boys, dropping to Kauai High School last week in Poipu, popped back into the lead with a team total 321 after its leading golfers, Graham Morgan and Logan Laymon finished the Saturday round as the first and third individualists. Morgan carded an even par 72 for top individualist honor, and Laymon finished with 79 for third, overall.
“The Kapaa boys came ready to play no matter the weather, and put up the lowest team score of the season with a 282,” said Paul Ito, the KIF scorekeeper. “Leading the way was Graham Morgan with an even par round of 72 which was highlighted with an Albatross on the Par 5 fifth hole.”
“After pounding a great drive off the tee, Graham hit a high drawing 3 Iron for his second shot that found the bottom of the hole for a score of 2 on the par 5,” Ito said. “According to Dean Knuth, former senior director of the handicap department at the USGA from 1981 to 1997, and now a Golf Digest contributing editor, the odds of making an albatross are about a million-to-one. Congratulations, Graham!”
Sandwiched in the second berth, Lucas Summerhays finished with 75, three strokes back of Morgan.
Kauai High School boys carded a 339 for second place followed by Waimea High School chasing the Red Raiders by 14 strokes at a team 354.
On the girls’ course, Kapaa continued to dominate play when the Lady Warriors finished in first place with a team 282 followed by Kauai High School carding a 325. Waimea High School rounded out the leaderboard at a team 404.
Juliette O’Shaughnessy continued to hold the Girls’ top individualist honor after finishing the Makai with an 88 to tie with team mate Mehana Guy.
Kauai High School’s Amalia Abigania filled in the third berth at 90, or two strokes off the pace.
The next KIF Golf match will be played on Saturday at the North Shore Preserve. The first tee times start at noon.
