MOLOAA — A male visitor died on Friday afternoon at Kaakaaniu Beach, also known as Larsen’s Beach in Moloaa.
According to preliminary reports, at approximately 12:30 p.m., first responders were dispatched to Kaakaaniu Beach for a swimmer in distress. Friends of a male visitor who had been snorkeling in the area were unable to locate the swimmer and called 911.
The individual was observed to be unresponsive in the water and was brought to shore by Kauai Fire Department personnel. Despite efforts to revive him, the swimmer was declared deceased at the scene.
The victim was identified as a 43-year-old man from California. An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death. Foul play is not suspected.
Kaakaaniu, or Larsen’s Beach, is not staffed with lifeguards. Visitors are strongly advised to exercise caution if entering the water at any of the non lifeguarded shores.
Authorities additionally recommend only swimming at beaches where lifeguards are present.
