KEKAHA — Kauai marked its third traffic-related fatality of the year after the bicyclist involved in last week’s traffic accident succumbed to his injuries.
The Kauai Police Department KPD identified the man involved in Thursday morning’s traffic collision as 79-year-old Irineo Eder of Kekaha. Eder succumbed from his injuries on Saturday, March 1.
Police reported on Feb. 27, a bicycle collision prompted the closure of Kaumualii Highway in Kekaha. At approximately 7:30 a.m., a 2007 Toyota truck was traveling westbound on Kaumualii Highway when a bicyclist, also traveling west, swerved onto the roadway and collided with the truck.
Eder, who was not wearing a helmet, was rushed to the Wilcox Medical Center in Lihue in critical condition, where he died two days later on Saturday. KPD released a statement and extended their heartfelt condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time.
Following preliminary investigation, it appears that speed and impairment do not appear to be factors in the crash.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to call Officer Henshaw at 808-241-1616. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers Kauai at 808-246-8300, submit a tip at crimestopperskauai.org, or use the Crime Stoppers Kauai P3 Tips Mobile App.
