LIHUE — Detective Lucas Hamberg with the Kauai Police Department (KPD) was recognized for his exemplary investigative efforts in a complex homicide case during an awards ceremony on Feb. 28.
Detective Hamberg was recognized as Employee of the Month for February 2025 by the KPD Police Commission during their monthly meeting on Friday. The accolade was given for his exceptional investigative and leadership skills and unwavering dedication to the safety of the Garden Island community.
The Police Commission reported that a Hanalei man was indicted last month for his involvement in the Jan. 2024 homicide investigation case. It was reported that on Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, KPD responded to a call at approximately 3 a.m. and discovered a body inside a burned vehicle at Anahola Beach Park.
Forensic examination revealed that the victim had been shot multiple times before the body was incinerated in the vehicle. It also showed that the body was knowingly treated in a way that would outrage any family or community.
The details prompted Detective Hamberg to demonstrate exemplary leadership within the homicide investigation team. Hamberg and his team gathered evidence through exceptional collaboration and systematically pursued all leads for a year. Their persistence ultimately led to a tip that broke through the case and led to the identification and arrest of the suspect.
Their combined and exceptional efforts resulted in a Grand Jury indictment of the suspect on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025, on charges of Murder in the Second Degree, along with First Degree Arson and Abuse of a Corpse.
Detective Hamberg’s diligence, persistence, and dedication were instrumental in securing justice for the victim and providing closure for the family.
Assistant Chief Kalani Ke addressed the room and praised Detective Hamberg and his family for their dedication.
“Detective Hamberg’s outstanding work on this case is just one example of his selfless dedication to our community,” said Chief Ke.
“This investigation was very complex, demanding long hours that often meant time away from loved ones. Mahalo to Detective Hamberg and his ‘ohana — their sacrifices and support make his work not only possible but impactful.”
The Police Commission recognized Detective Hamberg with several lei and a certificate to celebrate his exceptional service. This recognition inspires colleagues and reinforces KPD’s mission to protect and serve the community with unwavering commitment, the Commission said.
