KEKAHA —A traffic collision prompted the closure of Kaumualii Highway in Kekaha on Thursday morning.
The Kauai Police Department KPD reported that on Thursday at approximately 7:30 a.m., a 2007 Toyota truck was traveling westbound on Kaumualii Highway when a bicyclist, also traveling west, swerved onto the roadway.
That’s when the front right passenger side of the truck struck the bicyclist. The rider of the bicycle, a 79-year-old Kekaha man who was not wearing a helmet, sustained serious injuries and was immediately transported to the Wilcox Medical Center in Lihue, where he remains in critical condition.
Once on scene, KPD’s Traffic Safety Section Unit closed Kaumualii Highway in both directions for about an hour and a half. At the same time, they conducted their investigation, diverting traffic to Elepaio Road.
The truck driver, a 47-year-old resident of Kapaa, reported no injuries and fully cooperated with officials while on the scene during the investigation. Speed and impairment did not appear to be factors in the crash.
While the investigation remains ongoing, police are urging witnesses who may have seen the crash to call Officer Henshaw at 808.241.1616. Individuals wishing to remain anonymous can contact CrimeStoppers Kauai at 808.246.8300.
