ELEELE — Law enforcement discovered an unresponsive Eleele man after a single-vehicle crash on Friday, Feb. 21.
The Kauai Police Department KPD reported that at approximately 6:20 p.m. on Friday, a 2002 Dodge truck traveling eastbound on Kaumualii Highway struck the guardrail fronting the Eleele Shopping Center.
Once on the scene, KPD officers, along with emergency personnel, discovered the driver of the car unresponsive. Medical personnel’s immediate attempts to resuscitate the man were unsuccessful.
The arrival of KPD’s Traffic Safety Section unit quickly prompted the closure of Kaumualii Highway in both directions for an hour while they conducted their investigation. The reported speed and impairment do not appear to be factors in the crash.
The driver of the Dodge, a 76-year-old man from Eleele, was transported to Kauai’s Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waimea, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is currently pending to determine the exact cause of his death.
