LIHUE — Hawaii Children’s Theatre on Tuesday announced registration is being accepted for its highly anticipated Spring Break Theater Bootcamp, and Film Production &Performance Workshop, providing young performers and aspiring filmmakers with an immersive hands-on learning experience.
“Finally, after years of dreaming and planning, Hawaii Children’s Theatre now has year round programming for kids,” said Melissa McFerrin Warrack of HCT. “In today’s challenging world for kids, there is no better time for more ways to inspire their imagination and build teamwork. These are programs which are not just for experienced theatre kids, but a way to get involved and discover the magic of theatre.”
From March 17 through 21, students will have the opportunity to dive into the world of performing arts through two unique programs — a theater bootcamp featuring a production of Aladdin KIDS, and a film acting and production workshop in partnership with Hoike Kauai Community Media. Registration can be done online by visiting the website www.hctkauai.org. HCT class leaders are encouraging early registration because spaces are limited.
The Spring Break Theater Bootcamp: Aladdin KIDS is geared for young people 8 to 15, and invites the young performers to develop their skills in acting, singing, and dancing while working toward a full performance of Aladdin KIDS.
Under the guidance of experienced instructors, students will build confidence, learn the fundamentals of live performance, and create lasting memories with their fellow cast members. No prior experience is necessary.
The classes run from March 17 through 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a live performance on Friday starting at 6 p.m.
“The best thing about HCT bootcamps is watching children surprise themselves with their capacity and focus,” said Tom Frascatore, Spring Break Bootcamp director. “Five days from castinvg to finished show and performance is a really aggressive goal, and they blow past it every time. Best of all, they emerge from a very intense week proud of their achievement, excited for the next challenge…and confident in their ability to meet it.”
Film Production &Performance I is geared for students 12 through 18 years old. The program runs March 17 through 21 from 9 a.m. to noon, and includes performance, filming, and editing of a short scene.
By partnering with Hoike Kauai Community Media, the program offers a unique opportunity for students interested in acting for the screen. This hands-on workshop, led by Emmy Award-winning media professional Erica Byetrs, will cover on-camera performance techniqes, auditions, set etiquette, film lingo, camera operation, and basic editing.
“This workshop is an incredible opportunity for young aspiring performers and filmmakers,” said Allegra Gaines, President and CEO of Hoike Kauai Community Media, and Executive Director of Hawaii Children’s Theatre. “By combining the strengths of Hoike and HCT, we’re offering participants a unique experience that bridges the gap between stage and screen. Students will not only refine their acting skills for the camera, but also gain hands-on experience with camera operation, set etiquette, and basic editing. By the end of the program, they’ll be certified Hoike producers, equipped with industry knowledge, and have a fully edited short scene showcasing their work. It is the perfect blend of creativity and technical skill, designed to inspire and prepare the next generation of storytellers here on Kauai.”
