HONOLULU — Waimea High School girls soccer, unseeded in the Motiv8 Foundation Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II state championships, upset the No. 5 seed Kailua High School to advance in the Division II state tournament.
Menehune Calli Gambito found the net in the first 10 minutes of play for the 1-0 win on Wednesday on Oahu.
With the victory, Waimea advances in the Division II state tournament to face No. 4 seeded Seabury Hall of the Maui Interscholastic League in a 6 p.m. kickoff on Thursday at Castle High School.
Kauai High School, seeded No. 2 in the tournament, enjoyed an opening day bye and will face Waialua High School on Thursday starting at 4 p.m. at Pearl City High School, an accommodation done in the face of the weather system that pummeled the state.
Both venues are a result of the HHSAA decision on Wednesday to move the tournament to Turf Fields due to imminent weather threat.
“In anticipation of the imminent threat of heavy rain and high winds, the HHSAA has announced the relocation of all eight quarterfinal matches of the HHSAA Division I and II Girls Soccer State Championships to playing fields with artificial turf,” the HHSAA said. “This decision was made on Wednesday to allow teams ample time to adjust their travel and logistical plans.”
The Division II consolation matches originally scheduled for Thursday have been postponed to today.
A full schedule of the re-assigned fields and starting times are posted on www.hhsaa.org.
There is no admission charge for the quarterfinal and consolation matches.
The HHSAA prioritizes the safety of its student-athletes and appreciates the understanding and cooperation of all participating schools, teams and supporters.
