LIHUE — Two Kauai Police Department officers were acknowledged for their formidable actions during an award ceremony on Friday.
KPD Sgt. Mike Nii and Officer Nicholas Kam were honored for their life-saving actions during the Kauai Police Commission monthly meeting on Jan. 24.
The commission reported that on Dec. 12, 2024, Nii responded to a call regarding a driver who’d lost consciousness while driving his vehicle on Kapule Highway.
The vehicle remained in gear and drifted onto oncoming traffic, coming to a complete stop at the embankment. Nii pulled the victim out of the vehicle and began administrating cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
When Kam arrived on the scene, he assessed the driver’s pulse, then patched the driver with his KPD-issued Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and delivered a life-saving shock. Nii resumed CPR until fire crews and medical personnel arrived and continued medical assistance to the driver.
KPD Chief Todd Raybuck honored the officers’ bravery.
“Today, we honor the bravery and selflessness of these officers, who went above and beyond to save a life,” he said. “Their quick actions, dedication and commitment to protecting our community exemplify the very best of what it means to serve. Their teamwork and adherence to emergency protocols were crucial in giving the individual the best chance for survival.”
The police commission awarded Nii and Kam with the Life Saving Medal, an award given to individuals who attempt to save a life by exhibiting exemplary professionalism, bravery, composure and selflessness.
The officers also received a certificate and a lei was draped over both to celebrate their exceptional service in law enforcement.
