PUHI — Shealee Moises is just a freshman at Kauai High School, but picked up one of eight state qualifying swims on Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation Swim, Qualifying Meet No. 2 at the YMCA pool.
Moises participated in the Girls 500 Yard Freestyle event and stopped the clocks in first place with a swim of 5 minutes, 48.35 seconds, a scant 2 seconds better than the 5:50.29 standard.
Kauai High School junior Brandon Lin picked up qualifications in three individual swim events as well as participating in two relay team events for a total of five eligibility spots.
He started the day with a qualification in the Boys 200 Individual Medley where he stopped the clocks at 2:02.02.
“Did you see the time?” Lin asked his coach while resting the nearly 30 seconds before teammate Kohlton Sanchez touched in the 200 IM. Without saying, Lin’s time in the event is nearly 10 seconds better than the qualifying standard.
Lin, whose younger sibling Griffith is a 10-year-old state champion with Swim Kauai Aquatics, also picked up qualifying swims in the Boys 100 Yard Butterfly where he broke the minute mark at 55.92 seconds, and the Boys 100 Yard Breaststroke where he stopped the clocks in first place at 1:02.36, nearly 13 seconds ahead of silver finisher Blake Becker, a Kauai High School freshman.
Lin also participated in the Boys 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, and the Boys 200 Yard Medley Relay team events that qualified for the state swim meet.
Island School sophomore Sean Lottermoser was the third individual qualifier, stopping the clocks at 1:01.41 in the Boys 100 Yard Backstroke event.
The Island School Girls 200 Yard Medley Relay team, including swimmers Hannah Hovland, Eva-Rose Rapp, Maiha Kjeldsen and Taimana Kjeldsen, rounded out the day’s qualifications after capturing first place with a 2.07.95 swim.
The KIF qualifying swim meets continue on Saturday, starting at 8 a.m. at the YMCA pool.
