PUHI — Noeau Keopuhiwa, the Kauai Community College vice chancellor of Student Affairs, was stationed at an orientation tent on Monday, offering refreshments and information to students attending the first day of class for the Kauai Community College spring semester.
“I know enrollment is up,” Keopuhiwa said. “We had our convocation for the staff last week. I don’t have access to my notes right now so I can’t give you the exact numbers, but the enrollment is up from last year.”
Another hot spot for first day of class was the KCC Bookstore where students flocked to get textbooks and other materials for their classes.
“Enrollment is up from last year,” said Noel Mock, the KCC Bookstore manager. “You would think that there would be more people in here, but more and more classes are using digital books so students don’t need the traditional textbook materials.”
Instead, the bookstore is a popular stopping place for food between classes with the cafeteria being available for limited service. Mock said the supplier for bento lunches won’t be starting service until Wednesday.
Wednesday also is the day the KCC Student Government celebrates “E Komo Mai Spring 25!” at the Student Life Center, Campus Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
New students are invited to “Sing to your heart’s content with karaoke, student entertainment with B.J.,” sign up for clubs and organizations, and learn about campus services. There is also an opportunity to win prizes.
Free refreshments will include shave ice, saimin, “buttery popcorn,” and door prizes.
Students have a week ending Friday to make changes to their courses registration at the college’s One Stop Center during the regular operating hours.
Spring semester ends on May 16, highlighted by the college’s annual commencement ceremonies.
