LIHUE — Waimea High School girls basketball kept its unblemished streak going, and Island School held off a tenacious Red Raider wahine squad on Thursday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation contests waged at the Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea, and the Wilcox Gymnasium on the Island School campus.
The Menehune wahine were led in its 64-29 victory by guard Hailey Mata who tickled the twine for 19 points, including long distance three-balls in the first and third stanzas. Alyssa Gummerus helped the victory with 12 points, including a third quarter trey, and Shayden-Leah Guerrero added 10 points, including a third frame three-ball.
The visiting Lady Warriors were limited to Taira Samiano peeling off 20 of the team’s 29 points. All of her marks came from buckets and free throws. Other Lady Warriors teasing the net from the charity stripe include Alena Abell with 2 points, Trinity Guillen with 3 points, and Sisilia Kell with 2 points.
Over at the Wilcox Gymnasium, Island School’s Kennedy Braun had four of her biggest points of the night dropping in the final seconds of the contest as the Voyager ladies held off a hard-charging Red Raider squad, 47-43. Braun finished four-for-eight at the foul line.
In a contest where Kauai outgunned the Voyagers, 13-11 in the second, and 17-14 in the fourth quarter, Braun’s four points kept the Voyagers in front in the final ticks of the contest where Lady Voyager Breyanna Alfonso finished with 14 points, including a pair of bombs from outside the three point arc.
Inside tall post Halia Vicoy-Fuimaono added 10 points, including eight marks dropping in the second half before her counterpart Braun took to the charity stripe. Kailea Sokau-Masulit dusted the outside with three treys and a charity pair (right before Braun took her turn) to lead the victory that came with guard Kolohaiahe Kuhaulua fueling three big buckets.
Red Raider guard Anaiah Mendez took the scoring lead with 11 points, five dropping in the fourth quarter when she unleashed a trey in Kauai’s 17-14 run. Jazlyn Corpuz dropped six of her game-total eight points in the fourth frame, and Kamryn Wellings’ yellow shoes carried her to seven marks, all sinking in the second half. Kauai inside post Lailah Kalani finished with eight first-half points,
The next girls basketball games take place on Monday when Kauai takes on Kapaa at the Bernice Hundley Gym, and Island School takes on Waimea at the Clem Gomes Gym. There is a Junior Varsity contest that tips off at 5:30 p.m. at the Bernice Hundley Gym. The varsity contest tips off 20 minutes following the completion of the JV game.
There will be just a single contest at the Clem Gomes Gym starting at 6:30 p.m.
