LIHUE — Kauai High School took both its Junior Varsity and Varsity games, and Island School took a 4-point edge over Waimea High School on Tuesday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation boys basketball games played at the new Kauai High School gymnasium and Wilcox Gymnasium on the Island School campus.
Waimea’s Mar Ruiz finished with a game-high 19 points, but the Menehune came up short, 53-48, against the Voyagers who was led by Lucas Summerhays dropping 16 points, including a pair of bombs from beyond the three-point arc.
Garrett Hadley and Matt Dobashi each added 12 points to fuel the Voyager win, and Orion Magaoay finished with 10 points, including treys in the second and third quarters.
Ruiz had no treys in his game-high scoring collection, and neither did Daniel Kaohelaulii-Kala who ended the contest with 12 points and height advantage for the Menehune. Mykah Brun added eight points.
Waimea finished the contest with just Rhenz Punzalani firing the team’s only three-ball compared to Island School who finished with nine bombs from outside the three-point mark.
Over at the new Kauai High School gymnasium, Red Raider JV player Jose Mikemund lit the fuse to an explosive game-high 16 points to lead the Raiders’ 45-31 victory over the JV Warriors that was limited to single-digit scoring.
Naki Tuulangavalu topped the JV Kapaa scoring with six points followed by Kaison Yanos and Kaleo Gonsalves each adding four points.
Helping Mikemund, Asa Bailey and Kingsten Ordonez each tucked in six points apiece.
Kapaa coach Kamahao Kauhane had described the varsity contest as going to be a barn burner, and was pretty accurate in the description.
With Kauai High School holding a 34-26 lead at the break, Kapaa roared out of the locker rooms to whittle the lead to within 2 points in the third quarter. Kauai responded with a 17-9 run in the fourth quarter to seal the deal with a 63-49 win.
Red Raider Reese Jenkins combined with Camren Holt Ho to score 41 points in the victory. Jenkins finished with a game-high 22 points, including treys in the first and fourth stanzas. Holt Ho fired 10 of Kauai’s dozen points in the third quarter en route to his game-total 19 points.
Barkley Gilman added 11 points to the win before fouling out of the contest.
The Warriors took its lead from Austin Green who finished with 17 points followed by Reimel Camacho adding 10 points. AJ Johnson finished with eight points.
The boys next take to the court on Friday when Waimea takes on Kauai at the new Kauai High School gym where about a hundred students from the Elsie Wilcox Elementary School Creative Arts are expected to perform during the break, coordinated by the Red Raider Productions.
The JV contest is scheduled to tip off from 5:30 p.m. with the varsity game starting about 20 minutes following the completion of the JV game.
Island School will play a single game starting at 6:30 p.m. when it meets Kapaa at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
