KAPAA — Kapaa High School girls basketball took both ends of its contest against Kauai High School on Friday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls basketball games played at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
The Island School Voyagers made the trip to the Clem Gomes Gym to face Waimea High School, earlier clinching the KIF first round, in a contest where the final game stats were not available at press deadline.
Kapaa Junior Varsity girls controlled the Kauai JV, 47-20, behind a game-high contribution from Taisa Tupou. Gina Nunes helped the victory with 14 points, including four bomb from beyond the three-point mark.
Kauai JV got its high marks from Gabrielle Mendez who hit a trio of three-balls for nine points. Kaimi Miyasato finished with eight marks, including a pair of long-distance balls.
On the varsity court, Lady Warrior point guard Taira Samiano set the pace for the Kapaa 52-38 victory with a 20-point contribution that included dropping a trio of treys. Alena Abell added nine points, and Tyra Carvalho finished with seven points.
Jazlyn Corpuz set the pace for the Red Raiders after finishing with 17 points, including a three-ball dropping in the second quarter. Zariah Fernandez added seven points.
The KIF starts Round 2 play on Monday when Waimea visits the new Kauai High School gymnasium to face the Red Raiders, and Island School makes the trip to the Bernice Hundley Gym to face Kapaa High School varsity in a single contest.
The Kapaa JV will meet the Kauai JV in a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. That contest will be followed by the varsity Menehune meeting the varsity Red Raiders 20 minutes following the end of the JV contest.
Kapaa and Island School will tip off starting at 6:30 p.m.
