ELEELE — Fire officials on the West Side successfully extinguished an arson fire on New Year’s Day.
Firefighters with the Kalaheo and Hanapepe fire stations were dispatched to Olali Street in Eleele shortly after midnight on Wednesday.
Once on the scene, fire personnel discovered the structure unoccupied with pieces of wood on fire at the base of the Kai Olino Affordable Housing Project’s exterior. Firefighters extinguished the fire and found no signs of fire extension in the building.
Kauai Fire Prevention Bureau then took command of the scene and noticed pieces of wood neatly placed on the corner of the burnt structure, and an exterior window shattered, causing officials to believe the fire was set intentionally.
No injuries were reported; however, damages to the structure and its contents were estimated at $15,000.
Kai Olino is a privately owned affordable housing project that is currently empty and in development.
