LIHUE — Just in time for New Year’s cleaning, the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center crew will be on-site at the Kauai Resource Center located at 3460 Ahukini Road, adjacent to the Reynolds Hi5 recycling center, and near the Lihue Refuse Transfer Center on Jan. 10 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Kauai residents, businesses and other organizations can bring in unwanted or unneeded items for reuse by the ARC. These items include clothing, small furniture, children’s toys, books and shoes. Of note, clothing and other textiles do not need to be in good condition. Torn or stained clothing is acceptable.
Chemicals, eWaste, appliances, medical items and broken items will not be accepted.
During the drop-offs, the Salvation Army ARC team requests that people remain in their vehicles while on-site due to health and safety concerns, heavy equipment operating in the area, and to minimize the chance of injury to customers while unloading heavy items.
County officials further encourage people to check with their local thrift stores to see if they are able to accept the contributions before bringing the items to the Kauai Resource Center for the monthly donation event.
The ARC crew also offers pickup services to the island’s thrift stores and businesses. Thrift stores and businesses can call 808-241-4838 to schedule new service. For individuals that would like home pick-up service, call the Habitat for Humanity ReStore at 808-335-6105, or RP’s Random Closet at 808-346-0020. Customers should note that RP’s Random Closet is a for-profit agency.
The Salvation Army ARC team was heavily involved in Salvation Army’s various holiday projects like the Thanksgiving community luncheon, red kettle bell ringing, and more that kept the team on Oahu busy.
With the New Year celebration marking the end of the busy holidays, the Salvation Army ARC is now ready to resume the monthly donation event on Kauai.
The monthly contributions from Kauai residents and businesses are shipped to Oahu for reuse with the monthly contributions amounting to about 20,000 pounds of material that would otherwise end up in the landfill.
For information about general recycling or reuse, people can visit the county’s websites at www.kauai.gov/recycling, or www.kauai.gov/reuse, or call 808-241-4841.
