LIHUE — The Sea Scouts aboard USS Decisive were excited on Thursday when they learned that Oct. 24 was declared Kauai Sea Scouts Day by Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami.

Community Health Needs at next YWCA Community Resource Day

CRITTER: Rare pake ulua the Bigeye Trevally

I was scuba diving off my kayak on a deep water ledge at Pua’ena Point outside of Hale’iwa and got a big surprise. This 100-foot tall underwater cliff is open to the deep blue water and I often see game fish there like the Giant Trevally (ulua aukea) and the Bluefin Trevally (omilu), but on this dive I saw a large shape emerging out of the blue water and I thought it might be a humpback whale.

Students immerse themselves in Newell’s shearwaters

WAILUA — A group of fourth grade students from Island School, Kumu Sabra Kauka, and representatives of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and other community groups, including Save Our Shearwaters, watched on Wednesday as the four rehabilitated Newell’s shearwater birds took to the skies over a Wailua beach assisted by the hands of the spectators.

Potts’ field goal seals 20-14 win for Kauai
