KAPAA — Officials with the Kauai Police Department KPD identified 44-year-old Aaron Dorney-Sundquist, of Kapaa as the fatal victim involved in the bicycle collision on Christmas Day.
KAPAA — Officials with the Kauai Police Department KPD identified 44-year-old Aaron Dorney-Sundquist, of Kapaa as the fatal victim involved in the bicycle collision on Christmas Day.
Sundquist’s death marked Kauai’s eighth traffic-related fatality following Anastasi Brown’s death on Christmas Eve.
Officials reported that on the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 25, at approximately 6:50 p.m., Sundquist was on a bicycle ride when he attempted to cross the marked crosswalk at the intersection of Kuhio Highway and Kawaihau Road when he was hit by a 2008 Toyota sedan traveling northbound
First responders closed Kuhio Highway in both directions to conduct their investigation while emergency personnel rushed Sundquist to the Wilcox Medical Center in Lihue in critical condition. Sundquist was later airlifted off the island and transported to the Queens Medical Center on Oahu, where he succumbed to his injuries on Friday, Dec. 27.
KPD officials extended their heartfelt condolences to the Sundquist ‘ohana and all those grieving the back-to-back tragedies that occurred during the holiday week.
“Our hearts go out to the families who are grieving these tragic losses. We mourn with them, as these tragedies affect our entire community,” said Chief Todd Raybuck with the KPD.
“We remain committed to doing everything we can to prevent further loss of life. We urge all drivers to stay vigilant, obey traffic laws, and prioritize safety to help protect our community,” he said.
