LIHUE — Kapaa High School Junior Varsity girls basketball saw Ginger Nunes and Taisa Tupou each finish with 12 points in the JV Warriors’ 34-17 win over the Kauai High School JV on Friday night during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls basketball games played at the new Kauai High School gymnasium.
The difference between the two players’ scores was that Nunes bucketed four three-balls while Tupou balanced her numbers with four buckets in the opening frame and added two more buckets in the second half.
Tupou and Nunes accounted for all the Kapaa JV scoring in the first quarter that ended with the JV Warriors holding an 11-6 lead, the JV Red Raiders getting four marks from Noelani Garcia and a pair from Gabrielle Mendez.
Kaimi Miyasato was the top producer for Kauai High School JV with seven points, including a trey.
On the varsity floor, the Menehune came a step closer to the KIF first round title when Waimea beat Kauai High School, 71-26.
Cyani Bagaoisan-Rita finished with game-high 13 points to lead the Menehune victory that came with the Waimea blueshirts limiting Kauai to just single-digit scoring through four quarters.
Alyssa Gummerus added 12 points, including nine marks in the first quarter when Waimea out-gunned the Red Raiders 25-3 when Kauai’s saving grace came on a three-ball launched by Chloe Kaluahine with just ticks showing on the game clock.
Katelyn Constantino finished with 10 points in the balanced Waimea scoring, and guard Haley Mata ended with nine points, including a trey in the second stanza.
Jazlyn Corpuz topped the Red Raider scoring with nine points, including a three-ball in the second frame. Kamaile Manibog and Anaiah Mendez each finished with five points.
Officially, no scores were available from the Kapaa and Island School matchup at the Wilcox Gymnasium. However, Capt. Rod Green, the commentator for Warrior girls basketball, said Kapaa won, giving Island School its second loss, and paving the way for Waimea who has no losses.
The next KIF girls basketball games take place on Monday when Kapaa takes on Waimea at the Clem Gomes Gym in a single matchup starting at 6:30 p.m.
Kauai High School will visit the Wilcox Gymnasium to take on Island School. According to the KIF schedule, there is a JV contest between Kauai and Kapaa JV starting at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity contest following 20 minutes after the completion of the JV game.
