LIHUE — Law enforcement officials are asking the public to be hypervigilant on the roads this holiday season following the death of Anastasi Brown on Christmas Eve.
First responders on Kauai responded to several traffic collisions on the highway this week and reported its seventh traffic-related fatality of the year.
On Thursday, Dec. 26, officials with the Kauai Police Department (KPD) identified 25-year-old Anastasi Brown, of Lihue as the victim in the traffic collision that occurred on Monday.
It is reported that on Dec. 23, at approximately 12:20 p.m., Brown was hit by a 2016 Hyundai sedan while she was attempting to cross Kuhio Highway. Brown was immediately rushed to the Wilcox Medical Center in critical condition where she later died from her injuries on Tuesday, Dec. 24.
On that same Monday, a second traffic collision occurred at approximately 4:10 p.m., involving a vehicle colliding with a scooter at the intersection of Kuhio Highway and Kapule Highway.
Emergency personnel treated the occupants of the vehicle at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries. They transported the operator of the scooter to the Wilcox Medical Center for minor injuries.
KPD officials extended their heartfelt condolences to the Brown Ohana and urged the public to be extra cautious on the roads during the busy holiday season.
“We urge the public to be extra cautious, especially during this busy holiday season,” said Chief Todd Raybuck with the KPD, “It’s critical that drivers adhere to posted speed limits, avoid distractions, and drive defensively.”
Fatalities on Kauai are up by four this year, compared to last year’s. Chief Raybuck reminds everyone to consider their actions while behind the wheel because they do make a difference in preventing any further injuries from occurring.
“We also recommend allowing extra time for travel, being patient, and staying alert at all times,” added Chief Raybuck, “Your actions make a difference. Please, help us to prevent further traffic incidents and protect our community.”
