KAPAA — A cyclist is in critical condition after being struck on the highway on Christmas Day.
It was reported that on Wednesday at 6:50 p.m., a 44-year-old bicyclist was crossing Kuhio Highway in Kapaa on a marked crosswalk when he was hit by a 2008 Toyota sedan traveling northbound.
First responders along with the Kauai Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section closed the highway at the intersection of Kawaihau Road and Kuhio Highway in both directions for an hour and a half while the investigation was conducted.
The victim was assisted by emergency personnel and rushed to the Wilcox Medical Center in Lihue. He was later airlifted to the Queens Medical Center on Oahu, where he remains in critical condition.
The driver of the Toyota sedan did not report any injuries; however, toxicology results are pending while the investigation remains ongoing. Speed does not appear to be a factor in this case.
Investigators ask anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call Officer Himongola at 808-241-1617. Individuals wishing to remain anonymous can call CrimeStoppers Kauai at 808-246-8300.
