NAWILIWILI — Island School paddling teams captured two of the three varsity competitions, and Kauai High School boys picked up their third win on Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation long distance regatta at the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor where weather conditions were a lot less gnarly than the week before.
Racing under calmer winds and quieter waves, the Red Raider men picked up their third consecutive win by controlling the waters on a 4-mile paddle that stopped the clocks at 22 minutes, 59.42 seconds.
The Island School Varsity Mixed team of Maina Kjeldsen, Cael Tuey, Kaieo Barrett, Ellen Conway, Bradyn Nakayama and Mehana Dameron handily controlled their division race with a first finish of 24:24.12 over the Kauai team that clocked 25:00.00 over the 4-mile run.
The Island School Varsity Girls team of Taimana Kjeldsen, Ruby Swartz, Mia Javellana, Nola Brown, Chloe Ayonon and Mahe Havas picked up its second win by stroking past the Waimea High School team by 10 seconds, stopping the clock at 26:49.51 compared to the Lady Menehune who stopped the clocks at 26:59.32.
The Voyagers laid claim to a first place finish in the Junior Varsity Girls race. The Lady Voyagers finished seven seconds ahead of the Kapaa A team. Kauai High School took the JV Mixed race breaking the 13-minute mark with a run that stopped the clock at 12:47.10. The Kapaa JV Boys beating out Kauai High School over the 2-mile run.
The KIF paddlers return to the water on Jan. 11 at the Wailua River. The race format is a 1/2-mile Sprints.
