KALIHIWAI — A structure fire on the North Shore caused an estimated $100,000 in damage early Friday morning.
Firefighters with the Hanalei, Kaiakea and Kapaa fire stations responded to an emergency call at 4:40 a.m. for reports of a possible shed on fire in Kalihiwai.
Fire crews along with Rescue 3, the on-duty battalion chief, and the Kauai Fire Prevention Bureau arrived on the scene and discovered a domicile separate from the main residence fully engulfed in flames.
Once firefighters confirmed the structure was unoccupied and had no electrical power, they took command of the scene and quickly gained control of the blaze using the water tank. They also utilized the nearby stream and a trash pump to extinguish the fire.
The Kauai Fire Prevention Bureau investigators then took over the scene and estimated the damage to the structure and its contents to be $100,000.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
This was the second fire firefighters battled last week on the North Shore. An accidental blaze scorched three acres near Kamookoa Road in Kalihiwai on Wednesday.
