KAPAA — Waimea High School and Island School girls basketball teams picked up their second consecutive wins, and the Junior Varsity program made its inaugural appearance on the floor on Tuesday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls basketball games that were contested at Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapaa and the new Kauai High School gymnasium.
At the Red Raider gym, Island School overcame a halftime deficit to take a 43-31 win over the hosting Red Raiders.
At the Bernice Hundley, the visiting Menehune outran the Lady Warriors to a 69-34 victory. The JV Kapaa girls stayed ahead of the visiting JV Kauai girls, 20-13, in their first appearance on the hardwood.
Ginger Nunes led the JV Lady Warriors’ attack by dropping a pair of three balls toward her game-total eight points, and Taisa Tupou dumped seven of the team’s 20 points, five coming in the second half when Kapaa combined for 11 points.

Trinity Guillen was in the thick of board traffic and finished with 12 points after being limited to just three marks in the second half.
At the Raiderdome, the name assigned to the new gymnasium by Red Raider students, Jaelyn Corpuz nailed 10 points, including a pair of treys to lead Kauai to a 21-20 edge at the break. She was held to just five marks of the Raiders’ second half 10 points in the loss to the Voyagers.
Anaiah Mendez and Kamaile Manibog each finished with five points, including each Raider netting a trey.
Island School’s Kailea Sokau-Masulit dropped a three-ball in each of the quarters, and a plus one in the fourth put her at 13 points toward the Voyager win. Halia Vicoy-Fuimaona topped all Voyagers with a game-high 20 points.
With both the Menehune and Voyagers tied at 2-0 records, the next meeting on Monday becomes crucial for both teams. Waimea visits the Wilcox Gymnasium on the Island School campus for a single match against the Voyagers starting at 6:30 p.m.
Kauai High School will host Kapaa High School on Monday at the new Kauai High School gymnasium. The JV contest tips off starting at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity game starting 20 minutes following the end of the JV game.
