HONOLULU — The National Weather Service has extended the high surf warning for north- and west-facing shores of Kauai and Niihau through 6 a.m., Monday. The warning may be extended, dropped, or modified as conditions develop.
According to the NWS, an extended period of hazardous surf and beach conditions along the north- and west-facing shores will persist into early next week due to overlapping winter caliber north-northwest swells.
Surf associated with this swell will remain well above warning levels through the weekend before returning to advisory levels around Tuesday.
Surf up to 50 feet is expected along north-facing shores, and surf up to 35 feet is expected along west-facing shores of Niihau and Kauai during the high surf warning period.
Entering the water in these areas during the high surf warning is very hazardous and could cause serious injury or death. Beachgoers are also advised to use extreme caution as large breaking waves could make it dangerous for those standing along the shoreline.
The Kauai county Ocean Safety Bureau officials are advising no swimming and ocean activities in North Shore waters from Anini to Kee until further notice because of the dangerous ocean conditions.
