High surf warning through Monday morning

The National Weather Service has extended the high surf warning for north- and west-facing shores of Kauai and Niihau through 6 a.m., Monday. The warning may be extended, dropped, or modified as conditions develop.

Voyagers, Menehune girls hoops tied at 2-0

KAPAA — Waimea High School and Island School girls basketball teams picked up their second consecutive wins, and the Junior Varsity program made its inaugural appearance on the floor on Tuesday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls basketball games that were contested at Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapaa and the new Kauai High School gymnasium.

Free dental clinics continue

LIHUE — About 100 volunteers turned out on Friday to welcome and assist patients that stopped by to take advantage of the free dental clinic set up at the Island Comfort Air Conditioning and Heating Co. building on Rice Street.

ISLAND HISTORY: The sacred burials of Koaia Gulch, Kauai

In early 1939, Honolulu police officer Harry Shupak informed treasure hunter Julius Scammon Rodman (1912-2001) that in 1934, while pig hunting in Waimea Valley, Kauai, he’d discovered a thatched grass house perched high upon a cliff in Koaia Gulch that contained a mummified corpse.
