MOLOAA — A man succumbs from his injuries following a traffic collision that occurred on Kauai’s North Shore on Dec. 17.
The Kauai Police Department (KPD) responded to a crash on Kuhio Highway where a Moloaa man died following the crash near mile-marker 18 on Tuesday.
At approximately 1:45 p.m., KPD, along with the Kauai Fire Department (KFD), and American Medical Response (AMR) personnel responded to an emergency call and were dispatched to a traffic collision involving a Toyota Tacoma and a Kawasaki Prairie Quad.
It is reported that 77-year-old Stuart Hanchett from Moloaa was operating a Kawasaki Prairie quad and attempted to cross Kuhio Highway when the quad was struck by a Toyota Tacoma. The Toyota was being operated by a 69-year-old male from Princeville who was traveling in the northbound direction when the crash ocurred.
KPD diverted traffic through Koolau Road for a little over two hours to allow the Kauai Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section to conduct an on-scene investigation.
The 69-year-old driver of the Tacoma sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated by AMR personnel. However, Stuart Hanchett suffered critical injuries and was transported to the Wilcox Medical Center in Lihue, where he was pronounced dead by a medical doctor.
Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash at this time. However, the investigation remains ongoing, and toxicology reports and an autopsy have been scheduled and are currently pending.
