LIHUE — Every present will have a recipient, said Salvation Army Lt. Nalu Faasavalu on Friday as he watched the pile of packaged “gifts” grow at the Moikeha Building during the Angel Tree final collection day.
Faasavalu, who along with Lt. Stacie Faasavalu is serving their first Christmas on Kauai, said when they arrived here, they established a goal of 300 Christmas presents for people who would otherwise not be able to have any.
Taking care of the island with the Hanapepe Corps and the Salvation Army Lts. Jose and Andrielli Gonzalez, the Salvation Army covers everything from Hanalei to the Westside.
“We had a goal,” Faasavalu said. “But we registered nearly 450 gifts that is scheduled to be distributed next week. Every gift has a home. We are so grateful and appreciate everything the angels do. We have so many angels.”
Johnette Chun, the Employee Council’s Angel Tree coordinator, said the Friday delivery of 75 gifts was the most the council has done.
“We started out with 25 gifts,” Chun said. “That went out almost overnight. We added another 25 tags, and that went out, too. Finally, we stopped at 75 tags — the most the EC has ever done.”
The Angel Tree program also draws support from the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program that wraps up this weekend at the Kauai Veterans Center along Veterans Memorial Highway in Lihue.
Contributors of new and unwrapped toys are welcomed to fill someone’s Christmas wish on Friday afternoons, Saturday and Sunday.
