LIHUE — Through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share daily, front-page stories about families and individuals (we don’t use their real names), who are facing challenges and would appreciate a little help this holiday season.
The Christmas Fund is an avenue for everyone to provide that assistance. Donations are used by Zonta Club members to purchase gift certificates that are in turn distributed to families and individuals through social-service agencies.
The following are some stories we would like to share with our readers.
w Edward is a teenager who, despite facing challenges, is committed to grow in a positive direction. He lives with his grandmother Karla and although he is surrounded by love and care, life isn’t always easy for them. Kauai’s limited resources and high cost of living make it difficult for them to get by, and although Karla does everything she can to support Edward, their financial situation does not allow them to spend on things other than their rent. With Edward growing from a teenager to a young adult, finding clothes that fit him properly has become a constant challenge. Kauai’s limited selection makes it difficult for Karla to provide him with clothing that suits his needs. He often has to make do with ill-fitting clothes that are either too tight or too loose, making him feel uncomfortable and out of place, especially compared to other teenagers his age. Though Karla does everything she can for Edward, the strain of managing his clothing needs along with the other responsibilities of raising him as her own is taking its toll. Edward deserves to have clothes that fit him well —clothes that would give him the confidence to be himself, without worrying about his clothes feeling uncomfortable. Being able to shop online would make a huge difference for them. Access to a wider range of sizes and styles would allow Karla to provide Edward with clothes that actually fit, helping him feel more like the other teenagers. With more options, Edward could have the confidence to continue growing into the person he is striving to be, and Karla could feel more at ease knowing she is giving her grandson everything he needs to be successful.
w Fannie and Frank are a couple who after years of working and having a home, found themselves houseless due to the landlord selling their home. After being houseless for seven years and losing their jobs, they were finally fortunate enough to find housing. Because of their limited income, they can afford rent and food. They would appreciate help with kitchen and household supplies and would appreciate anything to become comfortable in their new home.
Each donation is accounted for and recorded. There are no administrative costs involved, and money goes directly to provide for those in need of Christmas presents and groceries.
If you hold a fundraiser for the Christmas Fund, let us know and we’ll spread the word. Anyone making a donation of $200 or more can have their picture published in TGI.
