LIHUE — Tickets for the “Talk Story Piano Duo” concert are now available online at the Kauai Concert Association website. The musical event will take place on Sunday at 5 p.m. at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center.
Pianists Monica Chung and the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Dr. Jonathan Korth will team up to present two pianists performing together on two pianos.
Chung is the immediate past president of the Hawaii Music Teachers Association, the vice president of Sing Out Kauai, and the artistic director of the Kauai Concert Association.
“Besides great music by two very talented performers, the concert will feature a recently donated Mason &Hamlin grand piano in addition to the Steinway at the Performing Arts Center,” said Karen Hall, the vice president of the Kauai Concert Association. “Having two beautiful pianos available is rare on the islands.”
Jason Blake, president of the Kauai Concert Association, said Talk Story Piano Duo is the fifth concert of the KCA 50th Anniversary season.
“Having the Performing Arts Center reopened has been magic,” Blake said. “This amazing Kauai audience is showing up in numbers we have not seen in more than a decade — more than 300 at one concert, more than 400 seeing ‘Rhapsody in Blue,’ and more than 500 attended the 50th anniversary concert, ‘The Planets.’”
“People are happy to be together again,” Blake said. “It does not hurt to get to see world-class performances on one of the best stages in the state of Hawaii. And now, the audience can even enjoy a drink before the show, and during intermission. The PA is fully alive on Kauai!”
Chung said the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center reopened during the summer following more than four years of closure due to the COVID pandemic and repairs to the facility.
“But did you know that there is a new star on the stage?” Chung asked. “The KCC PAC has long had the island’s finest piano — a Steinway ‘D’ Concert Grand piano. Now, she has a baby sister — a beautiful Mason & Hamlin grand piano that was generously donated to the KCC PAC during COVID. That little baby packs a punch and can keep up with the Steinway.”
