PUHI — Monday was more special than Cyber Monday for 14 Kauai Community College Nursing students.
These students shared in some $30,000 in scholarships presented by the Rotary Club of Poipu Beach Scholarship Committee that included Michael Curtis, Jan Pascua, Dani Dooley and Rebecca Fries.
Students Shandelle Kapuniai and Ashlie Williams were recipients of the Francis Dillion Memorial Scholarship fund that offered two scholarships to promote, expand and enhance the nursing skills of students in the Nursing program at KCC.
The scholarship fund was created through the generosity of Dr. John Dillon, the past president of the Rotary Club of Poipu Beach Community Foundation. The Francis Dillon Memorial Scholarship fund was created to honor his wife, Francis Dillon, a former nurse.
This year’s recipients were presented $2,500 scholarships for a total of $5,000. The scholarships have been presented to KCC students for more than 15 years.
The RCPB Scholarship Committee interviewed all of the students who applied for the two scholarships, and the club was so impressed with nine students that they recommended these students each be offered a $1,000 scholarship.
Those students were Corban Aliard, Kimberly Anne Blanes, Tatsiana Dashkevich, Ashley-Marie Domingo, Sara Jensen, Naomi Kaauamo, Shyli Lacaden, Giliian Pedido and Kailey Zemel.
The Rotary Club of Poipu Beach also learned that 11 students who had graduated from the KCC Nursing program were further pursuing their nursing education by enrolling in the University of Hawaii Distance Learning Program to earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. This is the largest number of Kauai students to enter this program, and the RCPB decided to offer additional scholarships to these students.
Three of the 11 students applied for, and each received, $4,000 scholarships for their education.
These students were Allison-Joy Cadiz, Angelica Cudiamat and Dutchess Kaneakua.
Fries, who helped the Mokihana Club with its recent scholarship presentations, said the Rotary Club of Poipu Beach wishes each of these outstanding applicants continued success in their chosen field of nursing on the island of Kauai.
