LIHUE — Five law enforcement officers were recognized for their outstanding service to public safety during a recent award ceremony.
Kauai Police Department Officer Alexander Lacson was honored and named this year’s recipient of the TOP COP Award by the Kauai Police Commission during the Nov. 22 meeting in Lihue.
During the past year, Lacson has continued to improve public safety, particularly on the roads, according to KPD. Lacson has successfully reduced impaired driving along with educating the public on traffic laws. Lacson has and continues to mentor new recruits as a Field Training Officer, and his commitment to law enforcement has left a lasting impact on both his collegues and the community.
“Officer Lacson is truly exceptional,” said Deputy Chief Mark Ozaki.
“His proactive approach to enforcement, strong leadership, and passion for mentorship sets a high standard. We couldn’t be more proud of the positive impact he’s made, and will continue to make, in our department and community.”
Also honored at the ceremony were the four agencies involved in the Chris Santos fugitive operation.
Officer Dustin Broad, Sgt. Brian Silva and Sgt. Anthony Abalos were also acknowledge for their pivotal roles in the operation.
In 2023, Santos, a fugitive on the run and wanted for multiple violent crimes, posed a high threat to public safety. Officers from KPD, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and several other agenciesall successfully coordinated to apprehended the fugitive.
All officers and agencies played key roles in the successful operation that ultimately led to Santos’s capture, despite his being on the run for nine days and making numerous attempts to evade arrest. Their exceptional teamwork and dedication earned officials the U.S. Marshals Service Awards, recognizing their outstanding contributions to the operation.
“These officers went above and beyond, working around the clock to pursue leads and ensure the suspect was apprehended,” said Ozaki.
“This national recognition speaks volumes about their commitment to protecting the people of Kauai and highlights the vital role of our partnering agencies. Mahalo to our federal partners for their critical support throughout this operation.”
The police commission presented the officers with a lei along with a certificate and a plaque as recognition for their outstanding contribution.
