LIHUE — Nearly a thousand Thanksgiving meals were served up to Kauai residents with the help of scores of volunteers coordinated by the leadership of the Salvation Army Lihue and Hanapepe Corps on Wednesday, the day before the traditional holiday.
According to Lt. Nalu Faasavalu of the Lihue Corps, the turkeys for the drive-through meal pickup were prepared by the Royal Sonesta Kauai Resort, the Sheraton Kauai Resort in Poipu and the Kauai Community College with volunteers from Southwest Airlines and the Marriott Kauai Vacation Club stepping up to serve meals.
Lt. Jose Gonzalez of the Salvation Army, Hanapepe Corps, said the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa prepared turkeys for the Hanapepe luncheon that featured a slate of entertainment, including performances by the various senior centers’ ukulele bands.
Volunteer servers included the staff and students from Ke Kula Niihau O Kekaha joining volunteers from the Lions Clubs and Capt. Andy’s.
Vanessa and Caesar Duarte of Da Wicked Brew brought their food truck onto the Hanapepe Corps property to donate free coffee.
