PUHI — Kauai Community College Nursing program students had a lot to celebrate Monday when 18 first- and second-year students shared $20,000 worth of scholarships provided by the Mokihana Club.
The Mokihana Club also offered $10,000 in scholarships to Kauai students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program offered by the University of Hawaii at Manoa as a Distance Learning Program.
Members of the club’s Scholarship Committee, including Rebecca Fries, Aileen Christman and Mokihana Club President Belinda Bartels, said this means the students do not have to go off-island to attend classes and earn their BSN degree. This increases the possibility that these students will stay on-island after they graduate.
“What is so exciting this year is that there are a record number of 11 KCC graduates in this program,” said Fries. “That is an all-time high enrollment in this program. Nine of these 11 students applied for scholarships from the Mokihana Club, and all will receive scholarships. The club is so excited to support these programs, and these Kauai students.”
Since 2003, the Mokihana Club has provided more than $317,000 to 222 students in the KCC Nursing program. With the new scholarship recipients in the BSN program, the club has increased its total giving history to $347,400 to a total of 252 students.
The Mokihana Club supports these scholarships through contribution from club members, the community, and funds raised through club fundraisers.
In May, the Mokihana Club hosted a Wine, Cheese and Chocolate Tasting event, and this Saturday will present a concert and silent auction at the KCC Performing Arts Center starting at 7 p.m.
Tickets for the evening of Hawaiian music with slack key guitar artists Keola Beamer and Jeff Peterson with Moanalani Beamer are available online at the Mokihana Club website at www.lthemokihanaclub.org.
The online auction is also available by visiting www.themokihanaclub.org.
