KILAUEA — A pre-Thanksgiving surprise strengthened an affordable housing project on Kauai’s North Shore.
Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have gifted Permanently Affordable Living Hawaii (PAL) $626,000 to support Kauhale O Kilauea’s project to further maintain affordable housing on Kauai.
The donation will secure five homes at Kauhale O Kilauea into PAL’s Hoomaluhia Community Land Trust (HCLT) and will make sure the homes remain permanently affordable to assist and maintain Kauai’s workforce now and for generations to come.
“We are deeply grateful for Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg’s support,” said PAL Executive Director Larry Graff. “The beauty of this gift is that it will have a generational impact. Their generosity will further our mission to create affordable, sustainable living for the people of Kauai by safeguarding these homes for future generations.”
The Kauhale O Kilauea project is part of the new expansion project currently underway on the North Shore. The project is set to offer affordable housing to local residents with priority to those who live or work in the area.
Earlier this month, The Chan and Zuckerberg Foundation also donated $1.6 million dollars to Namahana School, which is scheduled to open in next fall, and have provided several grants to the organization through the Chan Zuckerberg Kauai Community Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation.
