HONOLULU — PBS Hawaii announced that “When Silence Becomes The Song” will air on today starting at 8:30 p.m. There will be a re-broadcast on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. on the PBS channel.
Serge Marcil, the creative producer of “When Silence Becomes The Song,” said PBS Hawaii has already uploaded the film online for those who want to see the latest and final version of the documentary after the showings. The online link is https://tgilinks.com/3Zrln2p.
“‘When the Silence Becomes The Song’ is a full-length documentary film that is an update on ‘Forest Calls’ and its main media project,” Marcil said. “An important component of ‘Forest Calls’ is its website — https://forestcalls.org. The website explains how the various media project came about, who was involved, and more. The website also provides a ton of very useful information about conservation work, biodiversity, and the importance of resisting extinction.”
Cali Crampton, the Kauai Forest Bird Recovery Project project leader, is the film’s director.
“This is a Kauai story with Kauai protagonists and endemic and/or critically endangered birds from the Garden Island,” Marcil said. “The film has already been showcased with great success in several film festival and special screenings, including with Gov. Josh Green, the Hawaii Legislature, and others. This is the perfect opportunity for Kauai residents to get a better understanding of what is happening with our island’s forest birds.”
Marcil said 2024 is Ka Makahiki o Na Manu Nahele, or The Year of the Forest Birds. During the recent forest birds exhibit spearheaded by the KFBRP at the Kauai Society of Artists gallery at the Kukui Grove Center, the film that was screened was “Vanishing Voices,” and not “When Silence Becomes The Song.”
“Back in 2022, our media production company — 4Dmedia — collaborated with Kauai Forest Bird Recovery Project and submitted a proposal to document the story of the ‘akikiki, an endemic Kauai bird that is on the brink of extinction,” Marcil said. “We received funding from the Kauai Office of Economic Development and ended up putting together a Kauai-based media team to create several different media projects.”
“One of these projects is a full-length feature film titled ‘When Silence Becomes The Song,’” Marcil continued. “Before release, the film was shared with all of the Hawaiian Islands via virtual and in-person screenings so the film’s director could receive feedback and comments. Following a lengthy re-edit based on those comments, and conversations with PBS Hawaii, the film has finally been scheduled to air on Thursday.”
