WAIMEA — The Waimea High School JROTC air riflery team edged out Kauai High School, 1,109.4 points to 1,106.8 points during the 2024 National Sporter Air Rifle League on Nov. 17.
Rochelle Uri, finishing with 281.1 points out of a possible 300 points, led the Menehune team to its fifth consective win. She was helped by contributing shooters Gian Gawaran, Lee Ann Saniatan and Fredy Padamada.
Following her performance, Uri is ranked as the first place Girl JROTC 3-Position Air Riflery Shooter in Hawaii.
Kauai High School, competing against the Menehune in the head-to-head match of unbeatens in the National Sporter Air Rifle League, broke a four-match winning streak led by Caylee Garma, who finished with a 281.3.
Other contributing Kauai High School shooters included Andrew Sadamitsu, Jacob Andres and Brayden Bartholomew.
Both Waimea JROTC and Kauai High School compete in the Champions Division, where the teams are ranked in eighth and ninth places, respectively. With the win, the Waimea JROTC holds third place, nationally, in the Army JROTC Conference.
This week, the Waimea JROTC will compete against North Brunswick JROTC from Leland, North Carolina, while Kauai High School will shoot against Kelly Walsh Marine Corps JROTC from Casper, Wyoming.
The league is a national team league with an eight-week regular season and a post-season single elimination championship school shoot-off among the top eight teams.
Both Waimea Army JROTC, and Kauai High School compete in the Champions Division that is reserved for the top teams in the country and is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions.
