LIHUE — Island School senior Mary Magoun joined more than a hundred other high school seniors in the state on Wednesday in signing Letters of Intent on the nationally-recognized Letter Signing Day.
Magoun, the Voyager women’s volleyball team captain, put ink to paper before a small audience of family, fellow volleyball athletes and coaches, and Island School teachers after being accepted to play volleyball at the Pacific Lutheran University in Parkland, Washington, where her father, Sean Magoun, attended.
Mary said she hopes to continue building on the volleyball legacy she started while a Voyager. She explained the No. 13 jersey is being vacated following the graduation of its current senior player. The number is not being retired.
Mary has already expressed an interest in wearing the number she was identified with as a Voyager volleyball player. The saga prompted a sideline cheer — “Scary Mary lives on!”
Another statewide Letter Signing Day is scheduled for Dec. 4, coinciding with the completion of the high school football season.
