LIHUE — Three ongoing projects are going to make traveling through certain parts of the island a little more challenging for motorists next week.
The Hawaii Department of Transportation said there will be road closures in Nawiliwili in order for paving work to be done near the pier.
The schedule calls for a full closure of Kanoa Road from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m on Monday, Nov. 4, with a detour to Niumalu Road.
The schedule also calls for a full closure of East West Road from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7.
On the west side of the island, a single lane closure on Kaumualii Highway in the vicinity of Kikialoa Boat Harbor in Kekaha is in effect through December in order for work crews to complete permanent replacements of three 54-inch culverts.
The single lane closure is continuous and travel in both directions is being maintained through alternating traffic control, also known as contraflow, in the open lane.
That particular stretch of the highway was declared a traffic emergency zone in early April due to the roadway showing sings of potential culvert failure, the transportation department said when it initially announced the closure.
Temporary repairs and roadway reconstruction were completed earlier this year.
“This 24/7 lane closure will allow crews to replace the corrugated metal pipes with reinforced hi density polyethylene pipes and lift the traffic emergency zone designation,” the transportation department said.
Flaggers are on scene during active construction with temporary traffic signals addressing traffic control during nonworking hours.
And on the north side of the island, a single-lane closure on Kuhio Highway is in effect until further notice for emergency slope stabilization work in the Haena-bound lane at milepost 4.7 or Waikoko Hairpin Turn.
Traffic in both directions is being maintained via alternating traffic flow through the remaining open lane with flaggers in place to direct motorists.
The transportation department declared that stretch of the highway as a traffic emergency zone in late October. The designation allows the transportation department to expedite procurement permitting to make improvements to protect access to the state highway.
